I hadn’t read Bill Bryson’s book in so long that I wanted to give it another go.  It was just as funny as I had remembered, and I really enjoyed all the history and trivia he has mixed in throughout.  I remembered that they hadn’t finished the hike but I really did not remember just how little of it they did (about 40%), or how unprepared they were at the beginning of it.  Honestly, it’s making me feel quite prepared already and I haven’t done much.  At least I already hike and camp and have the gear.  Of course, my general idea of what the experience will be like is way off, I’m sure, and I have no doubt that everyone on the trail wants to pack it in at some point or other(s). Even if he isn’t a 2000-miler, he is still an 870-miler, and that’s a heck of a long way to walk, well deserving of respect. Taking six months off of your regular life is difficult to impossible for anyone. I’m hoping that I’ll be able to make it happen.
