Mount Kearsarge South is located in Winslow State Park and Rollins State Park in New Hampshire.  I met Gale on the Winslow State Park side since it has a slightly longer trail to the top.

We took the red blazed Winslow Trail to the summit, climbing 1100′ in 1.1 miles.  It was very rooty and rocky, with rock slabs showing up more towards the top.

There’s a fire tower at the summit at 2937′.  You can’t go quite up in the top of it but it still provides some added height to your views.  The wind was kicking and sent both of our hats flying while in the tower.  There’s also a picnic area in a more sheltered spot up there.

We then hiked the 1.7 mile, yellow blazed Barlow Trail back down to the parking lot.  It was a little less steep than the way up, but still rooty and rocky once back in the trees.

FYI, there’s a $4/person fee to enter the park, and the hike and views are well worth it.  Just make sure you have exact change, as there was no one at the gate to help.
