It was supposed to be storming this morning but it was sunny and warm in town. We wanted to take the 11am shuttle back to the trail but it was late and we ended up not getting back on the trail until after 12:30. We knew that Miss Janet, a well known trail angel, would be doing some Easter trail magic at Wayah Bald but weren’t sure if we’d get there because of the late start. It was cloudier and cooler on the trail but still nice so we made good time at first. We came down to Winding Stair Gap and there were two couples there separately doing trail magic, one giving away Easter candy and eggs, and the other giving away fruit snacks and crackers. Once we left the gap it started raining so on with the rain gear and on with the mud.
We were starting to drag when I started hearing music and people. There was trail magic set up at Wayah Crest picnic area! It was 5:30 and we’d gone 9.5 miles so it was a perfect stopping time. The rain had mostly let up so I quickly set up my tent nearby and then grabbed some hot dogs. They also had ham and beer and chips and tons of good stuff. It was set up by a group of thru hikers from last year, the Sunshine Gang. They came all the way from the Midwest to do some Easter magic. There are a ton of people here, enough for two bonfires. We had some jamming going on for a while too. The rain was off and on but the fires were strong enough to keep going and they had some pop up canopies to stand under.
I finally went to bed a little after 8, super late for me on the trail and the first time I’ve had to use my headlamp to get ready for bed. It was starting to rain again though and I’d just finally dried off so I headed for the tent.
