I was very interested to read this book about Bill Irwin, the first blind person to thru-hike the AT, but I didn’t enjoy it as much as I would have liked. While I’m amazed that he and his guide dog, Orient, were able to do the hike, I am still fuzzy as to the details of how they did it. They had a good amount of help but also hiked on their own a lot and I just don’t understand how the dog kept them on the trail. Also offputting was Irwin’s constant references to God telling him what to do and causing things to happen for a reason, etc. I was raised with religion but that kind of talk just puts me off completely.
