It was only 4.7 miles downhill to the interstate this morning. Yesterday evening I had called a few motels in the town of Mount Shasta and they all were fairly pricey. I decided that instead of spending too much on a crappy motel, I was just going to splurge on an actual nice hotel with plenty of amenities for my birthday. In this town, that’s the Best Western (it’s really nice, I swear!). But when I called to reserve last night, they had just booked the last room. I decided to call again on my way down the mountain this morning and they not only had a room available, but it was available right then, so we could check in as soon as we got to town. I was so excited, I raced the rest of the way.
It was supposed to be a hard hitch because there’s not much traffic at the I5 exit the PCT comes out at, but I stuck my thumb out when I heard a car coming up behind me, and we had a ride before we even reached the entrance ramp. She dropped us off at the hotel and we were in our room by 9am. My plan was to leave the room as little as possible, take advantage of the wifi, computer, laundry, breakfast, pool, hot tub, and bathtub, and go to bed early.
While I was in the shower, Stretch and Switchfoot decorated the room for my birthday. Later, we went across the street to an all you can eat pizza buffet for lunch. I got my hair cut, finally; it’s been way too hot for the length it was. We ran into AT ’13er Brother Bear in the parking lot. So random! More friends met us to see the movie Trainwreck, which was hilarious. Then they all came back to our room and surprised me with cake and singing. I tried to go in the hot tub, but it was way too hot. The pool was excellent though, and it was nice to float around without worrying about rocks and currents. And I am going to bed early. Awesome day.
